Bitter Sweet Love by Jennifer L. Armentrout (Review)

Bitter Sweet Love (The Dark Elements, #0.5)Bitter Sweet Love by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

After completing the beloved Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, that I could not get enough of, I wanted to start another series by this author. (because at this point she is my favorite author) I decided to read Bitter Sweet Love before reading the others, and after reading this I have to say that I cannot wait to pick up the first book. Wished there was some action in this book, but there was definitely suspense, and there is promise of some to come. Of course it was sprinkled with laughs that I've come to expect in JLA's books- Don't want to spoil anyone, but I loved the part with Herbert! :)

Review: The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

Product Details Age Range: 12 and up Grade Level: 7 and up Hardcover: 336 pages Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers (January 13, 2015) Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they're destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she's found the thing she's been made for. Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries' seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once. At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointy as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking. Until one day, he does... As the world turns upside down and a hero is needed to save them all, Hazel tries to remember her years spent pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough? REVIEW~ 5-STARS***** This book was awesome of course! Holly Black's books are fun to read and I enjoy her characters. I read The Coldest Girl in Coldtown after receiving a copy for Christmas, which was the first book I had read by Holly Black, and immediately became a fan of her writing style. I could not wait to get my hands on another, and I used a gift card to pre-order a copy of The Darkest Part of the Forest from Amazon and was completely satisfied with my decision. This book is a fantastic escape into an original, dark, creepy, magical place where I wanted to savour every sentence until the end. I thought there could have been a touch more action but the entirety of this book is blended well. When I should have been studying for exams I would sneak a page or two in and always read more than intended. The Darkest Part of the Forest is a treat for readers, and the characters likeable, so I plan to revisit Hazel's story at least once more. (And I do not like to re-read books) I want more, and would find it hard to believe that anyone would not enjoy this book. I am certainly a fan of Holly Black's books thus far- I'm enchanted by Holly's story-telling, and this book is special, written with quality, it's fun, and definitely recommendable. Now, I'm off to White Cat, book one in her Curse Workers trilogy. Happy Reading... Reesa***

REVIEW: The Winner's Curse by Marie Rutkoski

Winning what you want may cost you everything you love As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined. Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart. REVIEW 5 STARS***** This book was amazing and I loved every second of it. The writing was beautiful, the story well-written and refreshing, giving the reader a nice change of pace. I started this book the same day I received it intending to only read the first chapter. I found myself reading the entire night until there were only five chapters left, but I finished after only three hours of sleep. I cannot wait for the second book to come out and I'm so sad that I will have to wait. I loved the entire idea surrounding this book and it did not disappoint. The characters were likable, however, the romance was kind of just sudden and there. I was not really sure how the two characters became so involved, but just go with it because that's minor compared to the whole of the book. The cover on this book is a stunning in person as it is online and I just wanted to pet it. The Winner's Curse is worth the investment of time, money, and one less space available on your bookshelf. I have high hopes for the next installment.

Review - Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Series: Hemlock (Book 1) Hardcover: 416 pages Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books (May 8, 2012) Fans of Maggie Stiefvater and the hit television show True Blood will flock to this first book in the supernatural mystery series set in a town where werewolves live in plain sight. Mackenzie Dobson's life has been turned upside down since she vowed to hunt her best friend Amy's killer: a white werewolf. Lupine syndrome—also known as the werewolf virus—is on the rise across the country, and bloodlust is not easy to control. But it soon becomes clear that dangerous secrets are lurking in the shadows of Hemlock, Mac's hometown—and she is thrown into a maelstrom of violence and betrayal that puts her in grave danger. Kathleen Peacock's thrilling debut novel provides readers with a mystery that Kimberly Derting, author of The Body Finder, calls "clever and frightening," while Sophie Jordan, New York Times bestselling author of Firelight, raves: "Forget every werewolf book you've ever read. This one breaks the mold." REVIEW 5 STARS ***** This book was interesting yet slow going for me at first- But I was hooked by page one-hundred. I was going to give this one four stars, but I have to give it five because the middle and end of the book was full of twists and turns- Hemlock was well written with strong characters- the story wrapped up nicely. I'm going to start book two right away. I'm a fan ;)

Review*** Dead Men Kill by L. Ron Hubbard

Series: Stories from the Golden Age Audio CD Publisher: Galaxy Audio; Unabridged edition (January 1, 2010) Detective Terry Lane is a standout homicide cop who thought he’d seen it all . . . until now. As tough as Kevin Costner as Eliot Ness of The Untouchables—and just as incorruptible—Lane has seen the darkest side of human behavior. But he’s never seen a murder spree like this, targeting the wealthy, the powerful and the privileged. For the evidence is clear: the killers have not emerged from the seamy underside of the city . . . but from six feet under it. They are the walking dead, spreading terror and showing no mercy. Following a trail of drugs, blackmail, and the twisted clues of a seductive nightclub singer, Detective Lane will have to think outside the box…or he could end up inside one, buried alive. In 1934, while living in New York, the heart of the publishing industry, Hubbard struck up a friendship with the city’s medical examiner—a relationship that started his education in undetectable crime and provided him with authoritative clinical background for his detective stories. “A rollicking horror yarn [that] taps into the current craze for zombies. . . . heart-pounding.” —Publishers Weekly REVIEW~ 4-STARS **** This review was written for LibraryThing Early Reviewers. REVIEW~ COUNTDOWN CITY * BOOK 2- OF THE POLICEMAN TRILOGY BY BEN H. WINTERS

Countdown City (Last Policeman #2) by Ben H. Winters 4.02 of 5 stars 4.02 722 ratings · 205 reviews There are just 74 days to go before a deadly asteroid collides with Earth, and Detective Hank Palace is out of a job. With the Concord police force operating under the auspices of the U.S. Justice Department, Hank's days of solving crimes are over...until a woman from his past begs for help finding her missing husband. Brett Cavatone disappeared without a trace—an easy feat in a world with no phones, no cars, and no way to tell whether someone’s gone “bucket list” or just gone. With society falling to shambles, Hank pieces together what few clues he can, on a search that leads him from a college-campus-turned-anarchist-encampment to a crumbling coastal landscape where anti-immigrant militia fend off “impact zone” refugees. The second novel in the critically acclaimed Last Policeman trilogy, Countdown City presents a fascinating mystery set on brink of an apocalypse--and once again, Hank Palace confronts questions way beyond "whodunit." What do we as human beings owe to one another? And what does it mean to be civilized when civilization is collapsing all around you? REVIEW~ 4 STARS **** I've not had a chance to read the first book in this trilogy, but I decided to jump in anyways- The Author had a unique writing style that I enjoyed- The main character came to life right away and developed well throughout the story. Countdown City was well written, fast pace, exciting, and full of action. I'm excited to get my hands on book one and also continue on with this trilogy- worth the read. After I've read book one I will add to this review- I would highly recommend Countdown City to everyone. NOTE: I won an Advance Review Copy in a giveaway for free in exchange for my honest review.

REVIEW: 5 STARS***** I've had this book on my shelves for a couple of months before I decided to pick it up (the bright blue spine was hard to ignore) I'm so happy I finally picked this book up- I fell in love with this story. From my understanding is this is Authors debut novel- let's just say she has this in the bag* Come Fly with Me has a little bit of everything to appeal to all readers. Pacing was great- Characters were likable and vibrant, Writing was fantastic- Author has a wide vocabulary and never overused words throughout the story. The Authors attention to detail and descriptions were outstanding, which made this book so enjoyable. All the small details throughout this book you may have not gave much thought to come together perfectly towards the end. I loved every minute of this book and this is not my usual genera- I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a well-written romance-adventure filled with surprises and an actual story-line not dominated in the bedroom. The first couple of chapters I felt a little thrown in as your introduced to most of the characters early on, but by chapter four I was hooked and couldn't put it down. Come Fly with Me would be great to curl up with in front of a fireplace- to bad I don't have one. This book was a true delight- I look forward to more from this Author and would pick up her next book without hesitation. NOTE: I won a copy of Come Fly with Me in a giveaway for free in hopes of an honest review being posted online.

I’m working at a temporary job until I can finally break free. I’m my little brother’s temporary mother since our mom doesn’t give a crap about either of us. And I’m that temporary girl all the guys want to get with because I give it up so easily. According to the rumors, at least. But now I’m the temporary girlfriend of Drew Callahan, college football legend and all around golden guy. He’s beautiful, sweet—and he’s hiding way more secrets than I am. He’s brought me into this fake life where everyone seems to hate me. And everyone seems to want something from him. The only thing he seems to want though is… Me. I don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is, I think Drew needs me. And I want to be there for him. REVIEW: The Madman's Daughter (Madman's Daughter - Trilogy) BY: MEGAN SHEPHERD

In the darkest places, even love is deadly. Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true. Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood. Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect REVIEW: 5 STARS***** This book was amazing- I loved every moment of it and I'm going to assume this will be my favorite of 2013. There were some issues in the beginning with the story needing a little more thought but nothing too major as to ruin this awesome book. I would love to see this one made into a movie. I checked this book out from our local library and I've fallen in love and intend on buying a brand new copy for my shelves. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a dark- twisted- adventure :) I've not read the classic by H.G. Wells but I loved this book so much I've started The Island of Dr. Moreau --- The writing style was great easy to follow beautifully done. The characters were memorable as was the story. If your on the fence with this one pick it up it's worth the read.

REVIEW* Through to You by Emily Hainsworth

Camden Pike has been grief-stricken since his girlfriend, Viv, died. Viv was the last good thing in his life: helping him rebuild his identity after a career-ending football injury, picking up the pieces when his home life shattered, and healing his pain long after the meds wore off. And now, he'd give anything for one more glimpse of her. But when Cam makes a visit to the site of Viv's deadly car accident, he sees some kind of apparition. And it isn't Viv. The apparition's name is Nina, and she's not a ghost. She's a girl from a parallel world, and in this world, Viv is still alive. Cam can't believe his wildest dreams have come true. All he can focus on is getting his girlfriend back, no matter the cost. But things are different in this other world: Viv and Cam have both made very different choices, things between them have changed in unexpected ways, and Viv isn't the same girl he remembers. Nina is keeping some dangerous secrets, too, and the window between the worlds is shrinking every day. As Cam comes to terms with who this Viv has become and the part Nina played in his parallel story, he's forced to choose—stay with Viv or let her go—before the window closes between them once and for all REVIEW: 4-STARS **** This Debut Author has come blazing through the starting gate- with a Intriguing, Captivating, Beautiful, Smart, and Thought Provoking story* After reading this book I knew I had to write a review the same night- Everything about this book screams for me to give it 5 stars- I love it, but something is holding me back that I'm not sure I understand fully yet. Something that has to be small is missing in this story- which happens often, but the difference is I'm sure this Author can deliver what's needed..... All around this is an amazing story and Highly Recommended- Amazing plot, Perfect Pacing, Beautifully Written, Fantastic Characters, Stunning Ending, and total Movie Material.... About a quarter of the way in I thought that maybe this book isn't for me and I started to lose some interest but not for long... I'm so happy I didn't dwell on it and pushed right through- Though I thought this book was missing a little something at the same time the Author also delivered more than some by not over describing and filling this awesome story with non-sense. The Characters were full of life for me- likable- and they developed well throughout the story. I loved the twists in this plot- not that I saw them all coming- I did figure out the first major twist... Viv was a little to accepting of the other world for me and it's seems like a little more exploring would have brought this story around more. The Ending was stunning with the right amount of suspense. The Author leaves room for the reader's mind to wonder, which I enjoyed. I would love to read more from this Author and will keep my fingers crossed that a sequel will come. I'm so happy I had a chance to read this book- It's a great addition to the shelves and I HIGHLY recommend it... ;) Reesa***

REVIEW*** Wake (Dream Catcher, #1) by Lisa McMann

For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime. She can't tell anybody about what she does they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can’t control. Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant REVIEW: 4-STARS **** Great Start in this trilogy- plan to continue on with this series- The first two chapters felt like torture though because I was not used to the writing style and it seemed to be all over the place, but I kept pushing through and found that I could not put it down and was interested in the outcome of the story- I really enjoyed the twist at the end of the book- for me this is the reason I want to continue with the series if it would have ended any other way I may not have wanted to pursue book 2- FADE I liked that the book was short and I did not have to invest too much time into reading- (Sometimes it's nice to have a short book to read) The book was well written and leaves you wanting more- There is not too much more to say considering almost everyone has read this trilogy- Enjoyed & Recommended :)

OH MY TEAR: REVIEW: Chosen by a Horse by Susan Richards

The horse Susan Richards chose for rescue wouldn’t be corralled into her waiting trailer. Instead Lay Me Down, a former racehorse with a foal close on her heels, walked right up that ramp and into Susan’s life. This gentle creature—malnourished, plagued by pneumonia and an eye infection—had endured a rough road, but somehow her heart was still open and generous. It seemed fated that she would come into Susan’s paddock and teach her how to embrace the joys of life despite the dangers of living. An elegant and often heartbreaking tale filled with animal characters as complicated and lively as their human counterparts, this is an inspiring story of courage and hope and the ways in which all love—even an animal’s—has the power to heal REVIEW: 5 STARS***** Memoirs are not my first genera I go to when picking up a book to read, however as a horse lover when I came across this book I decided to give it a shot- If not only for the cover :) This memoir was beautifully written- and knowledgeable at the same time. I was completely engrossed in this book while reading it. The Author does a great job painting visuals for the reader and also empathy. No wasted words on these steady moving pages. I'm also not one to cry during a book I can't even think of one off hand, but I have to admit one single tear slid down my cheek towards the end of this book. Highly Recommended!

REVIEW*** Whatever Doesn't Kill You by Elizabeth Wennick

Jenna Cooper was only a few days old when her father was murdered and her family was shattered. Now fifteen, she daydreams of a picture-perfect sitcom family as she struggles with the gritty realities of her life. When Jenna finds out that Travis Bingham, the man who shot her father, has been released from prison, she becomes obsessed with tracking him down and confronting him. But her search reveals that there may be more to her father's murder than she has been led to believe--and will her relationships with her family and friends survive her obsession? REVIEW- 4 STARS**** I enjoyed Whatever Doesn't Kill You by Elizabeth Wennick- I don't think that this book will blow anyone's socks off, but I found it to be a nice- fun- quick mystery. I would recommend to anyone looking for a light read in the summer that is clean and fun. I see some pretty low ratings have been given to this book and I don't think that it was that bad at all. This book does have a great twist in the end and packs a strong message. Although most may not be able to relate to the daily life of the main character- this does not mean it is far fetched- Some may relate. For the most part the writing was great and fast paced and few times I felt their were some paragraphs that could have been left out. I would highly recommend to a younger teen looking for a clean mystery. The message in this book was fantastic and is useful to anyone. I won a copy of Whatever Doesn't Kill You in a giveaway for free in hopes of an honest review's online. Thanks! Reesa***

REVIEW*** Withur We by Matthew Bruce Alexander

Publication Date: January 11, 2010 Centuries hence, Man, seemingly alone in the universe, slowly spreads his civilizations across his corner of the galaxy. Tyrants vie for power, and in their fierce grip the colonies of the Milky Way are suffocating. In this society of many billions, a young marine, a highly trained war hero, returns home from his tour of duty. Physically powerful yet shy, awkward and unable to sway the masses with pretty speeches, Alistair Ashley 3nn makes a decision to strike at the hierarchy the only way he can. His decision starts him on a grand adventure, and as he is carried along by forces beyond his control, he comes to confront an ancient secret, one which may reveal Humanity's future. REVIEW: 4~ STARS**** At first this book was a little rough for me to get into- worried that I was not going to understand what I was reading and simply end up confused throughout the entire book, but once I stopped focusing on certain words- the story started to unravel with ease. This is not my typical genre, but Withur We managed to surprise me~ hold my interest and leave me with new thoughts to process. Some small issues with editing but nothing to bad as to disrupt this fantastic story. Though this book is forever long :) It was worth the time investment- Full of action, adventure, and detail I found this book to be well paced, unique, and an enjoyable world to enter. I don't think of myself as a strong political person- which is a big aspect of this book- the ups and downs of the main character's (Allistair) story and creativeness of this book was enough to make it through this massive book. The characters were well rounded- with good dialog- There were times after reading a paragraph that I would stop to absorb what I just read- The Author does an outstanding job with some of his choice of words and descriptions that I can not exactly explain.... for now I will go with Simple- but Captivating* This was a unique experience for me from an Author. Overall- I was pleased and had an enjoyable experience with Withur We- I'm glad to have been given the chance to read and review this book. I would read more from this Author in this style or any other- Recommended* Even if you think this is out of your comfort zone! Thank You! Reesa***
